The interest in Weaving of Mosi (Fine Ramie) produced in Hansan-myeon, Seocheon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do has been focused on the protection of it as intangible cultural heritage under the Cultural Heritage Protect Act. In contrast, Hansan-myeon, Seocheon-gun has received little attention.
The UNESCO has stressed the importance of the role of the local community in protection of intangible cultural heritage. This paper sheds light on the efforts made by locals in Seocheon-gun for the invigoration of the tradition of Weaving of Mosi and makes a suggestion on the desirable role to be played by the local community after the registration of Weaving of Mosi as intangible cultural heritage. This paper intends to point to the importance of institutional support for the protection and transmission of intangible cultural heritage, along with the fact that the local community should be the pivot point for the transmission of intangible cultural heritage. It is expected that this paper will serve as a reminder that the safeguarding of the traditional skill will work for the benefit of the locals.
