This paper examines how Korean learners of English perceive and produce the English vowels [?] and [o] through vowel identification tests. According to the results of the perception and the production tests, Koreans showed higher accuracy rates in perception than in production of [?] and [o]; Group A with relatively high English proficiency performed better than Group B with relatively low English proficiency in the perception test, but not in the production test; Group B consistently showed higher accuracy in the perception and production tests of [o] than in the same tests of [?]; and the syllable structure of target words also affected the accuracy rates in the perception and production tests and its effects were the same in both tests. The results support Flege et al.’s (1997) claims that the perception precedes the production; and that the performance in perception is correlated to that in production.
