The purpose of this is to survey the present usage of expanded balconies in apartment and to find out the residents’ awareness about balcony expansion. For this purpose, a field study and a questionnaire survey were executed for ‘Q’ apartment complex in Busan. The results are as follows; apartment residents were satisfied for expanded balconies of living rooms and bedrooms because of the enlarged living spaces, but they experienced inconvenience for expanded balconies of master bedrooms and kitchens. The reasons for inconvenience include difficulty of air conditioning, direct penetration of rain, privacy, insufficient work space, and etc. The indiscreet balcony expansion without considering residents’ lifestyle and space function will cause more serious problems, so that it is critical to execute detailed research on the functions and needs for balcony planning.
