This study observes the historical flow of stained glass, which has broken free from religious aspects of the past. Its role and scope are expanding according to various structural forms of modern architecture with the application of new techniques. The aim of this study is not just to present stained glass as an aesthetic factor contributing to the exterior of hospital architecture but to present it as a possible environmental cure factor.
Stained glass, an art of light and color, was used in the Gothic architecture of the Middle Ages and was believed to have spiritual power not visible to the human eye, being used as a medium to deliver the glory of God. The media of light and color have been linked to human lives in various forms and methods throughout history, and the color that is projected through the light can be physically powerful as well as physiologically comforting to people. Based on this theoretical background, the researcher has observed examples of stained glass usage in overseas hospitals.
Based on interviews with Guy Kemper and Paul Hausberg, Martin Donlin stained glass artists who are currently active overseas, this study conducted an in-depth analysis of installations of stained glass in hospital buildings such as the Children’s Hospital of Alabama and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. Based on this analysis, possible applications to domestic hospitals were studied.
Unlike the open attitude towards the use of stained glass in overseas countries, the domestic atmosphere regarding the use of stained glass is rather reserved because of problems such as people’s impression of stained glass as being part of church architecture, safety concerns regarding the materialistic traits of glass, and the financial burden of producing and installing such artwork.
In the case of hospitals, colors may have different effects on each individual depending on various environmental situations and psychological changes. Yet, detailed preliminary research suggests that the light and color effects of well-designed stained glass can function as a cure factor for people in hospitals. Thus, this study is expected to establish the foundation for future research.
