This study is to research an aspect of the modern women’s culture through the first Japanese women’s literary magazine, 『Seito』. To be more specific, it scrutinizes how Japanese women in the modern society accepted the western culture.
From this perspective the study pays attention to that translated writings in 『Seito』actually represent what the women pursued and aimed to achieve through literature. Therefore, this study thoroughly reviews why the『Seito』members selected specific writings out of so many foreign literary works. It confirms that many of the writings translated in 『Seito』were selected due to issues of women in them.
『Seito』issued supplements about the modern theater in order for in-depth research on them as the members thought the plays depicted issues of women.
『Seito』discussed the protagonists of the modern plays to study enlightened female characters and embody their own character of the modern woman.
When people talk about 『Seit?』, it is often mentioned “Five color drink” and “Yoshiwaradeungru” incidents. This study views that the incidents indicate the effect of western culture on women’s sphere and acceptance of the modern idea of equality.
Women’s magazines suggest the feminine ideal or woman’s roles of the era. Therefore, the research over women’s magazines like 『Seit?』can be effective in studying how the modern Japanese women’s culture changed, emerged, and grew as a new culture.
