In this study, theses themes for doctor’s degree in graduate schools of Korean universities majoring in Japanese language and literature were analyzed from 1994 to 2013. Main results are summarized as follows :
(1) The total number of theses for doctor’s degree in the past 20 years is 506 in which the number generally increased from 1994 (2) to 2005 (43) and since then remains at 40 per year on average. In terms of the nationality of the authors of theses for doctor’s degree, Koreans make up 86.5% (437 people) and foreign nationals (assumption) make up 13.6% (69 people).
(2) Research themes of the theses for doctor’s degree covered Japanese Linguistics 42.3% (214), Japanese Literature 36.8%(186), Japanology 12.6%(64), and Japanese Education 8.6%(42).
(3) Theses on Japanese linguistics mainly covered grammar 27.1% (58, in particular voice, verb), history of the Japanese language 25.7% (55, in particular vocabulary, grammar), and vocabulary 12.1% (26).
(4) Japanese Literature covered classical literature 30.6% (57) and modern and contemporary literature 69.4% (129) in which the former covered Japanese Literature in Heian Period 35.1% (20), Japanese Literature in Edo Period 26.3% (15), Japanese Literature in Middle Period 17.5% (10), and Ancient Japanese Literature 14.0%(8) and the latter covered novels 72.9% (94) and poems 8.5% (11). Contemporary literature mainly covered works by Tazai Osamu 12.8% (12), Natume Souseki 10.6% (10), Akutagawa Ryunosuke 9.6% (9), and Arisima Takeo 6.4% (6).
(5) Theses on Japanese education mainly covered acquisition 28.6% (12), and teaching and learning (in particular language teaching) 26.2%(11).
(6) Theses on Japanology mainly covered culture 21.9% (14), Korean-Japanese relations 21.9%(14), education 18.8%(12), society 11.9%(8), religion and thought 10.9% (7), pditics 10.9% (7), and economy 3.1% (2).
