This study investigated the antiquarian-form incense burners(古銅器形 香爐) the Joseon Royal Court. They were imitated the ancient bronze ware in China. They were first produced in the Goryeo period. During the Goryeo Dynasty, a variety of incense burners in addition to the antiquarian-form ones were used. Ever since the antiquarianform incense burners were chosen by the Joseon Royal Court, they were widely spread across the nation. In this sense, the Joseon Royal Court is very significant in a study of incense burners during the Joseon period.
In the Joseon Royal Court, incense burners were used for diverse purposes. Especially, they were particularly important during rituals. At the Jongmyo Jerye(宗廟祭禮), or Jongmyo Royal Ancestral Ritual, incense burners were used as a critical means to enshrine deities. They were also used during the King’s Parade or rituals to enhance the king’s dignity and authority. They made the space around the king sacred, having the ritual performed solemnly.
The incense burners of the Royal Court can be divided into Ding-form incense burners(鼎形香爐), Li-form incense burners(?形香爐) and dragon-decorated incense burners(龍香爐). Among them, Li-form ones account for the greatest number. Among the incense burners of the Royal Court, dragon-decorated ones are most unique. With the dragon in ‘Daemyeongjiprye(大明集禮)’ as a motive, Joseon’s unique dragon-decorated incense burners were created. In addition, a dragon’s face was further emphasized to express the Royal Court’s dignity and authority visually. So far, most studies on incense burners have focused on the Buddhist incense burners during the Korean Three Kingdoms period and Goryeo period. Therefore, this study is meaningful in that it unveiled the use of diverse antiquarian-form incense burners by the Joseon Royal Court.
