Objectives: In order to promote the public health of people in developing countries, it is important to evaluate health status with regard to various disease groups in advance. Therefore, the aim is to share the experience of volunteer medical service in Tajikistan.
Methods: The One-Family Medical Service Team at Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Korea provided medical services to 438 people in Tajikistan in July, 2011 at the 1st Center, 8th Hospital, Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
Results: The proportion of females in the children’s group was 25%, while that in the adult group was 70%. The mean age of subjects was 32.8(±18.6) years. Among adults, upper gastrointestinal tract disorders, muscular pain, and renal disease represented the most prevalent disease groups, followed by headache, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and anemia, accounting for more than 5% of diseases group. Among children, parasitic disease, renal disease, and upper gastrointestinal tract disorders represented the top three disease groups, followed by upper respiratory infection, malnutrition, and limb pain, accounting for more than 5% of each disease. In adults, non-communicable disease groups were present in high proportions, accounting for 98.5% of overall disease, compared to 1.5% for infectious and parasitic diseases. Among children, however, infectious and parasitic diseases accounted for 18.1% of disease, a higher proportion than among adults.
Conclusion: The main medical problems of people in Tajikistan were both non-communicable and communicable diseases. We believe the findings in this paper will contribute to the improvement of quality of primary health care planning by sharing the experience of volunteer medical service in Tajikistan.
