The purpose of this paper is to investigate characteristics of telephone English conversation from the analytic framework of an interactional discourse model. This study analyzed nine conversations collected from three telephone English service providers. It was found that the telephone English conversations were asymmetric between native teachers’s utterances and non-native learners’ utterances in terms of internal contingency, goal orientation and dominance. Students were only allowed to answer native teachers’ questions without voluntary questioning and spontaneous topic change. Most telephone conversations showed superficial and less authentic language than natural ones because learners should follow planned topics and activities from their textbooks. These findings implicate that authentic and interactional conversation features need to be incorporated in telephone conversation classes.
