This paper attempts to analyze stress preservation effects in morphologically complex English words. It claims that English suffixes are subcategorized prosodically for their base and the prosodic subcategorization is the major factor in determining the stress preservation of the English words with multiple suffixes. It also proposes that the hierarchy among the subcategorizations of suffixes can replace the phonological cycles, lexical levels and recursive evaluation of constraints suggested in the previous analyses.
