Currently in Korea, architectural education is absent-mindedly staring at the situation that the academia which is responsible for leading the society is rather being swayed by it. Society of these days, rotten to the core, standardizes the higher education system with one college entrance exam and satisfies its desire through the means of hakwon, a private educational institute. However, I want to say that we need to embrace the current system to the certain extent even though there may be discontent and deficiency. As various people are involved in the system and raise their voices different from each other, an annual reorganization is needed again and again. To protect our architectural education system from irrationalities such as the monotonous college entrance exam, colleges in the center of the society should tolerate current difficulties and be patient. Moveover, the essence of this problem is rather about strengthening the basic skills, solid skills needed for our own society.
Neither secondhand opinions nor hearsay, but basic competence cultivated by ourselves. Therefore, we do not have to over-estimate the essence of architecture. Imitating other fields may rather degrade it. Architecture is no more than architecture. It does not have to become music, art, science, or sculpture even expected. Architecture is just a construction process of ‘space’. Our architectural education teaches too much. Rather than teaching everything, we need to give students opportunities to set up their own goals and find out the possibilities. College education cannot satisfy every community members or guide them through one path. With the big picture and direction guidance, college education has already done half of its duty.
