The objective of this study was to explore physical education teacher trainees’ experiences with the Educational Service Activity(ESA) program that was introduced in 2010, to investigate the meaning of the activity and to provide a framework to guide prospective ESA participants. arrative inquiry, a qualitative research method, was introduced to analyze the results. Four preliminary physical education teachers were selected by using criterion-based selection and recounted their experiences with the ESA. The data were collected from interviews and documents that the preliminary teachers wrote, such as educational service activity protocols, monthly reports, review reports, term-end reports, experience memories, and self-reflection notes. Repetitive narrative patterns, threads and themes were extracted from field texts and reconstructed as a research text(Connelly & Clandinin, 2000). The meaning of the ESA can be characterized as a “meeting.” The first meaning of the meeting was a meeting with students and the second meaning was a meeting with classes. The first educational meaning of the ESA was a medium of communication, and the second meaning was a medium of growth. To compensate for shortcomings of the current ESA and to provide a blueprint for it, cooperation between academies and organizations related to the ESA is necessary.
