Old Chongqing City remained virtually unchanged in its original size and basic layout for at least 500 years from the 4th ruling year of Emperor Hongwu of Ming Dynasty (1371AD)to the 20th century when the city walls were demolished. Old Chongqing City had 17 gates, of which 9 were openable and 8 unopenable, a practice of the idea of 9 heavenly palaces and 8 diagrams (eight combinations of three whole or broken lines formerly used in divination). And of all the 17 gates, Chaotian Gate in the east and Tonghui Gate in the west, answering each other across great distance, figured most importantly. Old Chongqing has seen most of its walls and gates demolished with only Dongshui Gate and Tongyuan Gate spared to have remained to this day. A close look at the city walls of Old Chongqing with the theory of “site of memory ”proposed by the French Scholar Pierre Nora may well help bring to light the city gate culture and its memories: 1, the Fengshui culture and Fengshui memory as reflected in the design concept of the nine openable Gates and the eight unopenable Gates; 2, the political culture and political memories of the names of Chaotian Gate and the related streets; 3, the military culture and military memories of the names of Tongyuan Gate and related places; 4, the culture and memories of the ideals as suggested by Taiping Gate; 5, the folk songs as the remaining cultural memories. The names of the gates and of the streets of their locality can count as the historical “minimum symbol” of Old Chongqing ?these names, having survived hundreds of years and brimming with “maximum connotations”, evoke “collective memories”, and thus together constitute the city gate culture and memories of Old Chongqing.
