Sigmund Freud(1856-1939) investigates the nature of a mind in the unconscious. As a consequence, he institutes the psychoanalysis as the first school in psychology that approaches scientifically a world of the unconscious. His psychoanalysis as the lower structure of psychology focuses the layers of unconscious in order to materialize a dynamic of human psychology by comprehending the layers of conscious being the carefully worked-out interest in the classical psychology. On the other hand, Victor E. Frankl(1905-1997) who is the object of comparison to Freud in this study is absorbed in the existential analysis as logotherapy making a considerable contribution in the awakening the life-meaning and purpose on the man’s mind in order to follow up an inquiry of the will to meaning. The goal of this study is to search critically for the concept of the unconscious in Freud from a standpoint of Frankl’s existential analysis.
The consequences of this study are as follows:
First, the study shows that the structure of mind in Freud is based on the will to pleasure as well as the pleasure principle in the frame of a mechanism of the unconscious, on the other hand, Frankl’s form of thoughts originates thoroughly in the will to meaning. Second, from the point of view of Freud, the causes of hysteria and compulsive neurosis are revealed through a dream to attain the unconscious wish-fulfillment which is owing to the sexual experience as an infancy. From Frankl’s stand, nevertheless, the cause of neurosis is primarily due to the existential vacuum or the existential frustration because of the loss of meaning, purpose and value of life. Third, in the psychoanalysis which regards only to the physical and psychological sides, to become a human being is to become the impulsive existence. Conversely, Frankl’s existential analysis leads us to recognize the spiritual and existential dimensions including Freud’s two sides. Finally, Freud and Frankl want to analyze an inner world of human being. However, the psychoanalysis organizes the fact that id causes impulsively to rule ego and super-ego in the libido[the sexual instinct] by impersonating generally an individual part. But the existential analysis considers never the notion of the unconscious of repression or impulse.
