Nowadays, the Youngnam Theological University and Seminary encounters great crises along with most other universities in our country. These are the crises: the people who are expected to enter universities are going to decrease rapidly in about 10 years; the total membership of Korean churches, -especially Sunday school students-, are diminishing quickly. In addition, the finance of churches are becoming a problem; and the image of Christianity toward society is growing worse as well. These causes are making the department of theology in our university weak. To overcome these crises and to gain competitive advantages, we should educate virtuous people through right specialized qualities. After all, for this purpose, it is almost a necessity to make a revolutionary change in curriculum.
Our university’s department of theology should seek to provide students with a sound foundation for the next course, -the master of divinity degree. The curriculum the department of theology offers is a kind of preliminary course for the M. Div. course, where one should be well educated in academic and ministerial theology. Therefore, the department of theology needs to provide the following: first, to soundly equip syudents with a humanistic foundation, second, to master Biblical languages and Scriptures, third, to be skillful in speaking and writing both English and Chinese, and in working with computers and the internet etc. and lastly, to have pious leadership. With these perspectives, I propose a new curriculum for the department of theology of YoungNam Theological University and Seminary.
