The main purpose is to explore the relationship between son preference and birth plan of having an additional child among foreign wives in Korea. This study, building on the previous research on fertility behavior, attempts to explore the plan of foreign wives to have an additional child. Utilizing micro-data from the 2009 Korean National Multi-culture Family Survey, this paper examines whether foreign wives’ son preference is associated with a higher birth plan of having an additional child. The sample is composed of 20,308 foreign wives aged 20~49, and married to Korean men. Results show that foreign wives who have a daughter tend to have a higher birth plan for second child, regardless of socio-demographic variables. Among foreign wives with two children, birth plan of having third child is higher for foreign wives who have two daughters than for those with son/daughter. And birth plan of having third child is lowest for foreign wives who have two sons. Foreign wives who live with her husband’s parents are more likely higher birth plan of having an additional child. But effect of cohabiting husband’s parents on birth plan of having an third child is not statistically significant.
