The aim of this paper is to study on the text structure for Seoyugyeonmun (1895). It is comprised of twenty volumes and seventy-three chapters in macro-structure. It means that Seoyugyeonmun is a modernistic system for scientific book. And it is formed a large quantity of volume and chapter to convey information for the West. Although they lack unity and combination in content, generally they were arranged information for the West knowledge and metro-city in the first and last section each. And it was formed politics, economy, society, culture of the West in the intervals. Thus, it was closely organized the system, introduction-point-conclusion. In micro-structure, Seoyugyeonmun is combined with expository text and demonstrative text. An Expository text is closely related to introduce the West, demonstrative text is mainly used to explain politics and economy of the West. The former has parallel structure, while the latter has logical structure.
Next, the aim of this paper is to study on rhetorical characteristic in Seoyugyeonmun. It was mainly used the method of categorization and analysis to convey knowledge and information in expository text. Adjunctively definition, example, quotation were used, description and figure of speech were used to describe object vividly. And fact proposition, valuation proposition, policy proposition were evenly showed in demonstrative text. For this, universal truth, self-evident fact, historical case, statistical data, the opinion of a specialist were used for basis of an argument. This basis of an argument was expressed through example, quotation, comparison, inference. Therefore Seoyugyeonmun is expressed well discussion method in modern rhetoric theory. Accordingly we can see that it is the highlight text of modern writing in the time of enlightenment.
