This paper has selected the tactile onomatopoeia as the object of study among other Japanese synesthetic onomatopoeic words, analyzing the aspects of meaning extension in the pairs with correspondence of seion·dakuon, and examining the frequency of their uses in various semantic domains. The study has found that even though there are some differences in the frequency, the pairs with correspondence of seion·dakuon show similar meaning extension and correspondence in the case where they extend to specific senses such as hearing and sight. In the case where they extend to abstract concept like figurative expressions, however, even the pairs with correspondence of seion·dakuon don’t show any correspondence in meaning.
In the instance of co-occurrence restriction of noun·verb in various semantic domains, tactile onomatopoeia is strongly restricted in co-occurrence with nouns such as “body” and “food” when it represents specific and concrete senses. On the contrary, when its meaning extends to abstract and figurative expressions, it is not under any particular restriction in co-occurrence of certain noun·verb.
