The aim of this article is to introduce activities of Japanese cartoonists active in Korea in Japanese colonial period, especially of Iwamoto Shoji (1912-?), who was active as a cartoonist and reporter of the magazine “Chosen Koron (KR: Joseon Gongron)” and the newspaper “Keijo Nippo (KR: Geongseong Ilbo)”. Regrettably, the studies on Japanese cartoonists of colonial period have not appeared hitherto not only in Korea but also in Japan, except for excellent study of the Seminar in Comparative Studies of Korea Japan Culture on Hosokibara Seiki (1885- 1958)’s cartoon book, “Chosen Manga (KR: Joseon Manhwa)”. Consequently, the present article is the first attempt to study on Japanese cartoonists active in Korea.
After observation in detail on Iwamoto’s several cartoons appeared on “Chosen Koron”, the author could point out the possibility of that Iwamoto learned the method of cartoon directly from cartoonist / reporter Shimizu Taigakubo(1883-1970) who had frequented in Seoul as a member of “Tokyo Manga Kai” (Association of Cartoonists in Tokyo), although Iwamoto didn’t have opportunity of academic education on the fine arts. As for Iwamoto’s style, it could be pointed out that he often used thin and simple ordinary line in the first half of 1930s, but from the latter half of 1930s he invented his original way of drawing, by which he depicted vividly many satiric cartoons.
The author also referred on Iwamoto’s identity as second generation of Japanese colonizer in Korea. While cartoonists of Iwamoto’s senior generation, for example, Tsuruta Goro (1890- 1969) or Maekawa Senpan(1889-1960) didn’t think Korea as their hometown and went back to Japan as soon as they found new job in Japan, Iwamoto was proud of being born in Korea and raised by Korean rice. He even criticized that the jury of “Senten (KR: Joseon Mijeon)” (Korea Art Exhibition) who came from Japan didn’t understand the situation of Korean art world.
