In recent years, 3D printing technology has got huge popularity and many low cost 3D printers are now used by not only professional engineers but also by general consumers. However, unlike ordinary 2D printing technology, 3D printing is not one button magic solution. There are various 3D printing technology such as SLA, SLS, FDM, CJP, MJP, FTI, SLM, etc. And each technology and corresponding hardware has different geometric criteria in printing a model without failure.

Usually, engineers and designers do not know about those limitation and go through many trial-and-error cycles, which is very time consuming and expensive. In this paper, we analyzed typical geometric problems which can cause various failure cases in 3D Printing and classified them as a set of ‘Printability’ issues. We presented a set of tools to check printability of a model according to a given 3D printing method and hardware specification. And we developed a web based virtual 3D printing cloud service to demonstrate feasibility and show effectiveness of our printability checking capability, which is proven to be helpful for reducing time and cost in 3D printing process.
