This paper has studied on famous prostitute’s life through Banqiaozaji(板橋雜記). Banqiaozaji was written by Yuhuai(余懷) in Kangxi(康熙) 33. It is a record on the famous prostitute in Nanjing(南京) from the end of the Ming Dynasty to the early years of Qing Dynasty. Nangjing of the time was the place where the brothel were developed and the most of female entertainer of the time were in Nanjing. Thus Banqiaozaji is a important data on famous female entertainer’s life of the time.
This paper had explained the meaning of female entertainer first and indicated that female entertainer has started originally with Yueji(樂妓). Also it has emphasized the famous female entertainer in existence played an important role in Chinese cultural history and were radically distinct from the lowbrow prostitute. The commercial brothel were prevalent since Ming Dynasty and lowbrow prostitutes strikingly appeared. The famous female entertainer were magnified as the social conditions of the times. Consequently, famous female entertainer appreciation culture flourished. Thus the famous female entertainer condition were gradually valued.
Banqiaozaji has three kinds of the famous female entertainer condition. The first, they had independent characteristic style and brilliant ability rather than their beauty. The Second, they highly regarded elegant character and chaste life rather than the glamour. And the last, they valued keeping strong beliefs and principles more than living in wealth and honor.
