The end of Ming Dynasty witnessed the publication of a great number of popular fictions. Meanwhile, the requirements for reading materials by various social classes were also given adequate considerations. To meet their diverse reading desire, various editions of reading materials were released, and their market demand was tremendously increased. It also has a direct bearing on the economic interest of the book engraving industry. The popularity and feedbacks gained from the readers can also been deemed as their challenges and the target value to be realized. During this period full of change, the illustrations of The Golden Lotus enabled a visualized version of the book contents, yet exceeding its primary intentions to interpret the story of the novel, and the readers can enjoy multiple ways of story-telling with great enjoyment. This paper analyzes the illustrations of The Golden Lotus from three major perspectives: first, meticulous and precise description; second, the integration of time and space as well as the formation of images; and third, classification of the entire 200 illustrations by the literary achievements of the drawers or the engravers. All the vividness in the scenes of the events, the expansion of literary imagination, and the actual thoughts conveyed in the drawings and the amusing and recreating functions in the illustrations wakened the various desires in the readers and meanwhile, have them satisfied. The fact that the original story account of The Golden Lotus could be reconstructed in a visualized way, or with illustrations, is attributed to the understanding, analysis and the excellent technical skills in the drawers and engravers. The illustrated drawings in the popular fiction The Golden Lotus are a blessing for the readers.The literature emotions in a classic work, realized simultaneously by the author, the illustration drawers and the engravers in a matching tone, as reflected in The Golden Lotus, endow the novel with great values in the whole history of Chinese literature.
