This paper/research is a study about 『Qi Zi Hui』(『奇字彙』) which is the specialty publication of Variant Chinese characters published in latter of Chosun dynasty.
『Qi Zi Hui』(『奇字彙』) is the reference book which contains Gu-Wen(古文) written in Kangxi Dictionary(『康熙字典』). To deliver the meaning of orthodox characters(正字) in the text more effectively, only variant Chinese characters that have new parts of a split Chinese characters(偏旁) and new structures were the object of manuscript. This paper named these characters Variant Chinese characters combined by new parts of a split Chinese characters and classified them as semantic functioning of compound shape(會意形) and phonetic functioning of compound shape(形聲形).
In『Qi Zi Hui』(』奇字彙』), 11 semantic functioning Variant Chinese characters combined by new parts of a split Chinese characters(異文結合異體字) and 25 phonetic functioning Variant Chinese characters combined by new parts of a split Chinese characters(異文結合異體字) were found and their relationships with orthodox characters(正字) were examined. To clarify the meaning of orthodox characters(正字), the semantic functioning Variant Chinese characters combined by new parts of a split Chinese characters had a propensity of using parts of a split Chinese character(偏旁). Additionally, the sound character(성부) of semantic functioning Variant Chinese characters combined by new parts of a split Chinese characters was not only responsible for conveying the pronunciation of Chinese characters, but also in charge of expressing the meaning of the characters.
