As the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and the Great Recession triggered by the 2008 Financial Crisis have aggravated youth unemployment that was already higher than the overall unemployment, an effective solution is essential. The current employment policy of the central government which relies on nationwide standpoint needs to be changed since employment policies are more effective when status and characteristics of region are considered and planned accordingly. Countermeasures must focus on job mismatch and skill mismatch which are the main reasons of youth unemployment. In order to resolve the mismatch problem, a detailed and customized strategy based on regional employment structure analysis consisting employment characteristics such as industrial structure, job creation ability, age and education based peculiarities of youth in Gyeongbuk Province is required. Therefore, this study provides short, mid and long-term suggestions for employment acceleration in Gyeongbuk province based on employment structure analysis of youth and diagnosis of causes and status of youth unemployment.
