Lark-June George Paik researched the history of the Korean church with a focus on the history of mission. His view of the history of mission has been very influential on the younger generations, providing them with a basis for their understanding of this issue. There have been constant evaluations of his study, and there are arguments based upon his research. His research can largely be divided into three parts: first, the writing that is centered on the point of view of the introducer, the missionary; second, the writing that is focused on Korean studies, including subjects such as Korean history and culture; third, the research that is centered on the point where the introducer and the receptor interact.
Previous studies have attempted to interpret and analyze Paik`s view of the history of mission in ways. However, there have been different research findings, depending on the researcher`s point of view. The main reason for this is that there had not been any significant previous research on the meaning and formative background of the view of the history of mission per se. Instead, many studies have focused on the interpretation and application of Paik`s view of the history of the mission to the Korean situation.
This study does not attempt to understand his history of mission from the missionary`s point of view. As observed in the writings of Latourette and Lark-June George Paik, the history of mission is about examining the methodology of writing history and not about investigating the history of the missionary, the introducer. Therefore, this thesis aims to focus on the history of mission in terms of its historiographical meaning.
