This year (2014) marks 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War. The war lasted for more than four years and killed and wounded nearly 20 million soldiers and civilians. Among the underlying causes of the war are the rise of great powers, economic globalization, and nationalism, which also characterize current international relations of East Asia. This paper takes an overview of three issues in the debate on the origins of the First World War which require special attention in relation to current East Asian international relations. By examining the ways in which European countries of the early twentieth century, having failed to overcome tensions and confrontations between themselves, started a war, East Asians can expect to gain important insights and lessons in their effort to solve problems and explore alternatives. This paper deals in turn with the rise of the great powers, globalization, and nationalism, and their relevance to current East Asian international relations.
