The purpose of this research was to systematically evaluate the effect of regular exercise on body composition including body weight (BW), fat free mass (FFM), fat mass (FM), and % body fat (BF) in elderly adults aged 65 years and older. Systematic searches were conducted by using KISS and 21 randomized control trials which satisfied the inclusion criteria have been selected. Data from selected trials were calculated and collected data were analyzed by IBM SPSS Statistics 21 using independent t-test. Exercise groups presented decreased BW, FM, and %BF, while increased FFM after exercise intervention, however, control groups presented increased BW, FM, and %BF, while decreased FFM after intervention and those results were significantly different between groups. Within exercise group, both subjects aged lower than 70y and greater than 70y presented increased BW, FM, and %BF, while decreased FFM after intervention, but there were no statistical differences on changes in body composition between age groups. In conclusion, conducting regular exercise presents health beneficial effects on body composition by increasing FFM and decreasing FM in elderly adults aged 65 years and older compared to those without regular exercise.
