The purpose of this study was to review the development of women`s elite sports in China through researching elements which fostered the development since 1949 to 2012. The methods of this study are literature research and text analysis. By researching the literature about Chinese history and official data, etc, it was figured out that the development of women`s elite sports in China has been divided into 4 periods. And within text analysis, different features in those 4 periods were discovered. The first period was from 1949 to 1965 and within this period, the People`s Republic of China was built. In this period, Communism helped woman´s status in society to be elevated. Thus, women`s elite sports were started to flourish. The second period was from 1966 to 1977, which was ten years of the Cultural Revolution, within the changing of public health system values, women`s elite sport has been relatively developed. The third period was from 1978 to 1985. China began to be reformed and opened up, so that women`s elite sports in China had a comprehensive development, although women`s sports in other part of the world were not developed well. The last period was from 1986 to 2012. Because of China`s opening, their development of women`s elite sports was not significant in comparison to other periods. The result of this study is composed of two parts. First, despite the influence of economy and socio-culture, the policy of government had a main influence on the development of women`s elite sports in China. Second, the influence of policy was different in the four periods.
