This paper aims to examine how <National Museum of Korean Contemporary History> represents Korea"s modern history as public memory and its social implications. Acknowledging the past is continuously transformed and reconfigured by the act of memorizing in the present, it focuses on the sociality of memory and its performing cultural practice. In addition, it takes into careful consideration that memorizing of the past can take a form of “civilizing ritual” through representation system of the museum.
Based upon theoretical accounts of museum, we examine how the museum represents Korea"s recent past with a focus on its narratives and cultural constraints by site visits and observation of visitors. The analysis consists of two parts: historical, political, and descriptive contexts of the museum and its contents and ways of representation. The analysis shows that the museum represents the economic growth as a main theme while its broader contexts and multifaceted aspects are forgotten. Specifically, it takes a closer look at (1) who is responsible for economic growth, (2) what is the relationship between economic and political development, and (3) how economic growth was achieved. It finds that the museum “prohibits” labor and political development to represent a modern myth of economic growth. In sum, the museum"s representation of public memory is to visually mythify the role of the state in today"s prosperity and to implicitly provide moral ethics regarding the appropriate direction of Korean society.
