Compliment responses (CRs) are complex speech acts involving multiple variables across the interlocutor’s language, society, and culture. Although accepting strategies are the most commonly used CRs among native speakers of English, a number of studies have reported that many Asians employ rejecting strategies when responding to compliments (e.g., Chen, 1993; Pham, 2014). This study was conducted on ninety Korean EFL students in order to investigate if the patterns shown in previous studies also hold true for Korean EFL students, using discourse completion tasks. Specifically, the study was designed to find the major compliment response types used by participants with the aim of uncovering any differences in the use of pragmatic strategies among advanced-level EFL learners (KEA), beginning-level EFL learners (KEB), and Korean students responding in Korean (KK). Results illustrate that the major compliment response types employed by the participants were accepting strategies, whereas the least exercised strategies were rejecting strategies. In terms of the different usages of pragmatic strategies among the three groups, deflecting and denigrating strategies were frequently observed by the groups of KK and KEA. In contrast, these two kinds of strategies were rarely utilized by the KEB group.
