In the strategy for the doping control, attitudes and beliefs are considered an index of doping behaviour, relating the use of banned substances to greater leniency towards doping. The aim of this study was to quantitatively measure and to compare the doping related attitudes, beliefs and knowledge between elite and elite adolescent athletes. Data were collected by questionnaires among elite athletes (n=315) and elite adolescent athletes (n=123) who were participating in the 6th East Asian Games and the 2nd Asian Youth Games, respectively. Outcome measures included doping knowledge, behavior and attitude (Performance Enhancement Attitude Scale; PEAS). PEAS scores were 39.87±13.41 in elite athletes and 38.39±11.36 in elite adolescent athletes, in which there was no significant difference between the two groups. Sixty percent of elite athletes and 42.3% of elite adolescent athletes were well aware of banned substances in their events. Sources of information about doping were not different between the two groups. Twelve elite athletes (3.8%) and one elite adolescent athlete (0.8%) admitted the past use of doping knowingly or inadvertently. Athletes who reported that they knew others doping demonstrated higher PEAS score, in which there no significant difference between the two groups. Elite athletes showed significantly higher PEAS score in judo, while elite adolescent athletes showed significantly higher PEAS score in swimming, shooting and table tennis. Elite athletes demonstrated more permissive attitudes toward doping in 4 items among 17 PEAS questionnaires. This study may provide elite and elite adolescent athletes with targeted education strategy for effective anti-doping program. We hopefully encourage national anti-doping agency and sport federations to pay more attention to educational or preventive programmes in terms of athletes" attidudes, beliefs and knowledge.
