The purpose of this study is to explore changes in suicide rate and its causes in Korea by analyzing community-level longitudinal data. The data drawn from regional statistics provided by Statistics Korea (http://kostat.go.kr) and Korea Social Science Data Archive (http://www.kossda.or.kr) were used. The data set used for this study included various community-level indicators as well as suicide rates from 2005 to 2001. We used random effect panel regression techniques. Findings showed that differences in suicide rate within communities, caused by dramatic increases of suicide rate within communities for the last 3 years, as well as differences in suicide rate between communities substantially exist. According to the results of random effect panel regression analyses, as employment rate and the percent of welfare spending at community-level (t1) increased, suicide rate at community-level (t2) decreased. In contrast, as the percent of older adult population and divorce rate at community-level (t1) increased, suicide rate at community-level (t2) increased. The findings suggest that welfare system and the quality of life would be associated with suicide. Finally, we provided policy implications to reduce suicide rate in Korea.
