The Central Ethics Committee of Korean Medical Association is a mechanism with which medical professionals are to gain trust from society in general. The committee is responsible for executing effective discipline to impaired member and providing ethical guidelines in timely manner. And it should symbolize the collective effort for trustworthy professionals.
It was found that the trust for medical professionals is still limited to knowledge and skill, but society do not trust medical professionals as ethical. This general attitude means much to medical professional of Korea, because in Korea, where character is counted as crucial in evaluating a person, lack of trust may mean there is no ground for social contract between society and professionals.
For this purpose, researchers presented four principles of developing roadmap for the committee: principle of participation, principle of social contract, principle of moderate progress and principle of priority of trust. On the basis of the principles, the development plan for function of the committee- reviewing policy, disciplinary decision, overseeing local ethics committees, enhancing ethical understanding of members and revision of code of medical ethics- were proposed.
