Recently, we have seen a growing number of Korean documentary films incorporate “reconstruction” or “reenactment” into their documentary practices. In fact, renewed interest in the power of documentary reenactment is a global phenomenon. However, few critical resources explain the critical and aesthetic functions that reenactment can play in current documentary film practices and theoretical documentary studies. This paper aims to explore this issue in the Korean context by conducting historical research and case studies. We argue that reenactment provides a useful framework for analyzing the performativity of any historical medium that engages in the social process of defining what is real, true, and authentic. Thus, this framework can shed new light on the essence of documentary projects, in much wider contexts.
