Studies of the representation of calligraphy in The Tale of Genji have usually concentrated on the theme of good handwriting and what constitutes it. However, in the present study, I would like to focus on the educational aspect of calligraphy in the context of the father-daughter relationship. First, I analyze the story of Lady Murasaki, in which, after learning calligraphy, she expresses her feelings by writing poems using a brush. This symbolizes her process of development from a child to an adult. Second, I consider the education of Akashi no himegimi. After receiving a letter from Lady Akashi, Genji helps his daughter to reply to her mother with her own hands. This symbolizes the kindness and supportiveness with which he educates his daughter. In addition, Genji prepares very good inkstone and other writing materials for his daughter"s education. Third, the meaning of the two anthologies mentioned in the story is investigated. I demonstrate that these anthologies function as calligraphy pattern books. In conclusion, it can be said that calligraphy functions as an educational tool in The Tale of Genji. The context of calligraphy education makes it possible for a father and daughter to communicate with each other.
