‘Japonesia’ is a coined word created by Shimao Toshio(島尾敏雄), a post-war writer in Japan.This is a combination of the Latin word ‘Japonia,’ which means Japan, and ‘nesia,’ a Latin word ending that indicates Islands. Specifically, this means not exactly ’Japan’ but ‘Japan Islands.’ Shimao’s created the term ‘Japonesia’ to emphasize Japan not as a nation with Tokyo as its capital but as part of Islands spread over the broad Pacific Ocean, including Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia, and Indonesia.
The title, Japonesia, is a new representation of Japan that restructures its meaning.Amami(奄美) and Okinawa(沖?), which Shimao viewed as the centers of lives and thoughts, came to the fore, shaking the rigid frame of Japan with Tokyo as the firmly established center.
The issues that Shimao stressed out in discussing Japonesia are how to relate the edge, tip, or surplus deviant from the centers such as Amami and Okinawa, how to share the meanings, how to read again existences forced to keep silent and hidden, and how to embody ’Japan’ through such gazes and discourses.Japonesia represents the process of exploring these questions and answers.
