This article has tried to compare two famous short novels between Hwang Shun-won’s “Showers” and Yasunari Kawabata’s “Dancer of Izu” in respect of time backgrounds, space backgrounds, and characters. This comparison has been resulted in the interesting three findings: Firstly, the time backgrounds of two novels are fall commonly. Even though “Dancer of Izu” doesn’t have any specific description about the season of fall, “Shower” has a mixture scene summer and fall. The reason why two novel has adopted fall as time background is that the separation of girls and boys has good agreement with the emotional feeling of fall as time background; secondly, the space backgrounds of two novels are mountain areas commonly. “Shower” has the very vague but specific description of nature space, compare to “Dancer of Izu” tried to be concentrate on symbolizing nature as the images of the characters. In the two novels, the background of space is working for making more interesting narrative rather than any realized specific place; thirdly, the two works have the girls of the female protagonists, who are very actively to reach out to the boys. In spite of the class status and periodic circumstance they had been faced, two girls showed very aggressiveness in the novels. This aggressiveness is realized in the death of girl in the novel of “Showers’, the innocence of girl in the novel of “Dancer of Izu”.
