This paper seeks to analyze the ambivalent and conflicting emotions of the West and the East to the 9/11 terror attacks through The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid, a Pakistani writer. Although this novel reveals that the West is America and the East is Pakistan, the symbol of each nation is extended to the inclusive meanings of “the First World” and “the Third World”. Hamid wrote this novel contrasting the two worlds in this way based on his own American life, especially the experience of the Muslim Diaspora and the Other in Western society. In this novel, the 9.11 terror attacks serve as momentum which makes main character realize how America has perceived Muslims to be a negative race. With his awakening, Hamid shows that how the meaning of fundamentalism, which originated from Christianity, has been changed during history into “Islamic fundamentalism”. Based on Changez’s deep disillusion, this paper intends to show Hamid deconstructs negative myths of Islam carved deep in history and reimagines the formation of wronged identities that the West has made throughout conflicts between the two worlds.
