SeonMunYeom Song Jib (Collection of the evaluation and hymns ofSeon Gate, compiled in thirty volumes and ten fascicles) was compiled by Hyesim in the Goryeo Kingdom. The oldest and largest collection of Buddhist literature in Korea, it has many interrogative sentences, as it recorded Seon masters’ quotations at the form of Zen riddles. For this reason, it is considered as a precious source material for studying the spoken language of the Song Dynasty period. This thesis aims to study the syntactic and semantic functions of “question” pronouns, focusing on “Shenme (甚?)” and “Zenme (??)” which were coined in modern times and are frequently used. The results of the study have revealed that “甚?” and “??” interrogatives in SeonMunYeom Song Jib not only had several syntactic functions considering that they were used in several forms and components in sentences, but also had semantic functions such as question, counter-question, and designation, and reflected the linguistic traits of the Song Dynasty period. However, judging from the fact that syntactic and semantic functions were concentrated in one or two forms and partly didn’t appear in the spoken language during the Song Dynasty period, it is believed that they were still in the process of development.
