In general, pearlescent flakes have mainly used in cosmetic industry, because they make female look more beautiful by the shiny effect of it. Nowadays pearlescent flakes are widely used in many products such as home appliances, automobile, mobile phone, and etc. In this study, the effect of pearl on the glossiness perception is investigated. The perceived glossiness of seven white and black samples with different gloss levels were compared with those of two sets of fifteen glossy pink samples containing pearlescent flakes. The pink samples were different each other in terms of the average particle size and degree of distribution of the pearlescent flakes. Twenty-one observers were participated in this experiment. They were asked to estimate the magnitude of the perceived glossiness. The test samples were shown in the viewing booth illuminated with D65 simulator. The physically measured results showed that the pearly samples measured with 20 and 60 degree geometry have higher gloss than the white or black samples, while for 85 degree measurement geometry, pearl samples have a little bit lower gloss level than the those of white and black samples with maximum gloss. The psychophysical experimental result showed that the pearl samples have similar perceived glossiness with that of the glossiest white samples and have lower perceived glossiness than the glossiest black sample.
