During the Pacific War, when a fascism regime with the Emperor system of Japan was the dominant principle, Christianity was persecuted and its discourse was also restricted because it was thought to deny and blaspheme the imperial dignity.
In 1945, Farewell (Sekibetsu) was written as a novel of the national policy. It reveals “the national system (kokutai)” and the ideology of a nation with an Emperor system, but also shows Christian discourse, which is antagonistic to the concept of a national system.
In the chapters of the very limited story, Christian discourse was hidden in Dazai-like ways and shown metaphorically. How such elements are represented are examined in this paper.
In Farewell (Sekibetsu), discourse going along with the current state of affairs such as the national system (kokutai) is used but Biblical ideas such as guilty conscience and neighborliness are also included. Awareness and Biblical understanding of grave sin are inherent in figurative and suggestive ways rather than superficial ways through Biblical characters.
Thus, Christian discourse seen in Farewell (Sekibetsu) must be understood by considering the background as a literary text in wartime. Christian elements were displayed by disguising various nonpolitical natures in times with restrictions on thought and expression and they were expressed in various Dazai-like ways.
