Dazai Osamu is one of the most well-known novelists in Japan focusing on the private aspects of life; as such, issues of politics and the times the characters live in expressed in his works have not gained their due attention. But his works from the middle years of his writing career, written during Sino-Japanese War and Pacific War when freedom of expression was limited, pose a challenge in understanding his real intentions and messages hidden in his expressions unless the historical background and context of the times are taken into consideration. Therefore, this study looks at Dazai’s approach to war with reference to the larger context of the times his works were written, and with a particular focus on the keyword “waiting,” which is frequently used in his works after the Pacific War.
His works shows a frequent use of a dual expression that is about “agreeing to” the war and at the same time “negating” the war. Given the absolutism that was expressed through the political system during the war years and the strict censorship of the times, such multilayered expressions show a move to break away from the mainstream thought that society was engrossed in. Meanwhile, phrases that refer to “waiting” are also frequently used and it can be seen that the object for which one is waiting is “peace.” The strong sense of not willing to assist or agree to the system of war is expressed in this waiting, and this shows the writer’s approach and attitude toward war.
