It is not surprising anymore to see news about North Korea that the nation is opening its market and adopting new system recently. With the phenomenon and the push from the current presidency of South Korea, it seems there are growing interests in reunification of Korean Peninsula again in many fields. However, it may not be so easy to just start discussing on the master plan as part of post-reunification at the moment. Rather, it will be more constructive to find roles of South Korean experts in architecture and urban design as consultants for transformation of North Korea.
Amongst others, there are three areas that South Korean experts can picture and propose future scenarios not for South Korea but for North Korea; new residential model, cultural facilities and symbolic urban space. As we already know, new middle class has emerged already and keep growing in North Korean society, and it means that cities should adopt new types of residential model that can accommodate their increasing interest in private properties. Also, North Korea, especially Pyeongyang has numbers of great monumental architectures that house cultural programs. However though, as we can see from the example of Korea National History Museum of Pyeongyang, their contents are poorly kept and disorganized without proper curating. This is the point where South Korea experts such as architects, curators and preservation professionals should take their role. Lastly, many symbolic urban spaces in North Korea remain as single layered space rather than being multi-layered space. And, as the society is adopting more and more market economy, new urban activities and programs are needed along with emergence of middle class and market economy. Therefore, it is necessary to read what will be the future expectation and need from the transforming society of North Korea and to present future scenario of it.
