There is a classification into nine (industrial regions) in the previous research on industrial regions of North Korea. A distinction is made here between five major industrial regions (Pyeongyang.Nampho, Sinuiju, Hamhung, Chongjin, Kanggye) and four small industrial regions (Haeju, Anju, Wonsan, Kimchaek and Tanchon) (KOFC 2010, 17).
In this study a classification in industrial regions was made based on the number of factories in each cities and counties of North Korea.
To that end, five sources were examined independently.
The result was, that four major industrial regions (Pyeongyang. Nampho, Phyongnam/Anju, Hamhung, Chongjin) and four small industrial regions (Wonsan, Tanchon.Kimchaek, Jagangdo/Kanggye, Sinuiju) could be defined. The differences in the determination of the industrial regions can be explained by the division of industrial regions according to the number of factories, which has the goal to examine the actual state, while the classification in KOFC (2010) etc. also takes the prospects for further development into account.
