Defect inspection system using machine vision has been used in many fields of industry. In this paper, we propose a new surface inspection system using machine vision for thick steel plate. This optical system can distinguish surface noise and uneven defects because it generates cross pattern on uneven defect position. Also, we deal with the boundary detection algorithm. The conventional differential method generates many false boundary detection because of various causes such as surface noise, many cameras, installation location, various background images. In order to solve abovementioned difficulties, we propose a simple boundary detection method using shadow information of thick steel plate.
