The Year 645 was the time of tension due to the imminent threat of war between Tang (唐) and Koguryu (高句麗). The plan of Emperor Taizong (唐太宗) was to disperse the army of Koguryu, by making Silla (新羅) and Baeje (百濟) attack the southern part of Koguryu. Meanwhile, King Uija (義慈王) requested Emperor Taizong to send him the doctor Jiang Yuan-chang to treat his own diseases. Emperor Taizong, however, refused the request on the ground that Jiang had not returned from Yizhou (益州) at that time.
The doctor Jiang shown in Bunkanshilin was one of the editors of Xinxiuvencao (新修本草) completed in 659. His name can be found at the end of Xinxiuvencao, vol. 15 “Shou-qin part” (獸禽部), one of the remaining printings in Japan.
There exist five doctors from Jiang family among the editors of Xinxiuvencao: Jiang Xiao-zhang (蔣孝璋), Jiang Xiao-yu (蔣孝瑜), Jiang Xiao-wan (蔣孝琬), Jiang Yi-fang (蔣義方), Jiang Yuan-chang. Jiang Xiao-zhang held a high position named Chief of Shangyaoju (尙藥局) taking responsibility of the Emperor’s health. Another doctors also served for official medical service.
