Report Errors

This article explains the vagueness in U.S. policies on North Korea from the perspective of Realism and analyzes the cause of such position. In reality, the U.S. has shown a rather ambiguous and double-sided position regarding the nuclear issues of North Korea: a moderate position to seek dialogues and compromises and an unyielding position to impose sanctions and constraints. By analyzing the national interests of the US and the foreign relations in Northeast Asia after the end of the Cold War, the cause of these vague policies toward North Korea is that it is mutually contradictory to pursue two national interests of both resolution of North Korean nuclear issues and checks on China at the same time. Hence, in order to seek for a solution in nuclear issues of North Korea, it seems to be inevitable to withdraw the US troops in South Korea, but the same time it is necessary to be stationed in the region for the sake of monitoring the rapid growth of China.
