Since its previous dispatch of troops to Jianzhouwei upon Ming’s request, Joseon did not conduct a single Jurchen conquest for more than a decade. In the 22nd year of King Seongjong’s reign(1491), however, about a thousand Udige Clan invaded Josanbo. This led King Seongjong to decide upon an expedition, designed to conquer the North.
Most of the invasions were led by the Jainzhou Jurchens. There was animosity remaining between them. Joseon needed to either improve its relationship with the Jainzhou Jurchens or suppress them in order to promote stability of the North. Joseon decided to conquer the Udige Clan Jurchens, and not the Jainzhou Jurchens.
Yet at the time, Joseon failed to identify exactly who invaded Josanbo. And most bureaucrats opposed an expedition to conquer the North. But King Seongjong, strongly determined, carried on with the conquest. Just as his predecessors, his objective was to enhance the nation’s influence and strengthen the royal authority. The invasion from the Jurchens was used as a justification for the conquest.
Joseon at the time was still not aware of which Jurchens invaded Josanbo. Surfaced was an argument that the invaders must be identified before the launch of the campaign. But Seongjong thought differently, and did not consider such identification as a priority.
The conquest was massive, and mobilized the largest army ever in the early days of the dynasty. But it achieved very little. Such a petty achievement from a campaign which was pushed by the king despite a strong opposition from the vassals, led to the formation of a consensus arguing the campaign dismally failed. The royal authority was damaged.
