Although Richard Wilhelm is well known as a German Sinologue who translated Chinese Classics and respected Chinese people and culture, it is little known how his knowledge was formed when he worked as a German protestant missionary in the German colony, Qingdao. Because he lived in the highly complex age of imperialism and colonialism in 19th and 20th century, it’s problematic that Wilhelm is simply regarded as an absolute exceptional case free from colonial prejudices and orientalism. This point of view ignores the process and complexity of Wilhelm’s knowledge building in his socio-political context. In this respect, my study aims to examine his understanding of China historically as an example of knowledge formations between Europe and East Asia. After analyzing Wilhelm’s writings on Chinese politics, culture, and Confucianism, which were published in the magazine, Allgemeiner Evangelisch-Protestantischer Missionsverein(AepMV), I want to clarify the religious historical background of his missionary society, the influences of Christoph Blumhardt on Wilhelm, and his network of Chinese acquaintances. This paper shows how a progressive intellectual like Wilhelm, who, in his time, sharply criticized the imperial expansion of Europe, and Christianity and its missionary work, could have played an ambivalent role in China, supporting the reactionary group attempting to restore the Chinese monarchy. While defending Confucianism with this political group, Wilhelm believed that he could help Chinese people to preserve the spiritual basis of their civilization. In the end, my case study tries to show that we need a more minute historical approach to discuss the formations of knowledge and discourses in the East and West in the 19th and 20th century.
