This report has discovered that culture and narration are deeply correlated regardless of national differences. Among the correlated aspects of culture and narration, the theme of narration and cultural value are alike, so they have been received in the same way both in Korea and America. But when it comes to the subject material which is the basis of the story, the audiences of Korea and America responded differently. Subject materials of stories are the most fundamental aspects of culture. So this different reaction to the material explains that cultural uniqueness of the country was applied to how the audience thinks about the movie. A gap between responses from the Korean and American audience to “a bachelor party” which is the main material of the movie stems from cultural differences. But when you think about the success of the movie, you can find that cultural uniqueness is not necessarily an absolute factor for hit movies. The success of the movie is rather influenced by how this cultural uniqueness is correlated with narration in the movie. The Korean audience’s reaction to a movie will differ based on values of the audience along with characters and events of the movie. On the other hand, the American audience becomes interested in cinematic factors first, then narrative aspects such as characters and events and lastly in cultural elements such as symbol and values which are the basis of culture. It has been realized that the American audience puts much importance in the movie itself and doesn’t relatively correlate cultural aspects such as morality and ethics with how much they like about the movie.
In this regard, for cultural uniqueness to be loved by the global audiences, both cultural aspects and narrative factors should be considered together. And based on that, movies can become a universal cultural product that can be loved and enjoyed by anyone.
While working on survey analysis for this report, it was come to a recognition that it is important to take in-depth research and analysis on a subject. So it will be well considered and applied for my next research.
